5/12/2013 1 Comment Why Mother's Day Belongs in MayMay is the month that spring comes to its fullness. Blooms run riot, the air is warming, and the proverbial sap is indeed rising. It is fitting as May gives birth to the world again, Mother's day should be contained in it. Mothers represent the fulfillment of life's promise. The maternal spirit is in all of us, really. It is symbollic of the birth we all give to our hopes and dreams, plans and schemes. It is the divine spark that comes through us and in born into the world. This is to you, Mom, happy mother's day. And happy mother's day

5/10/2013 1 Comment Night May FallNight may fall but it cannot hide the truth of day. We think because the sun is hidden behind the earth, the darkness will protect us from seeing who we really are. I fear not. We see most clearly when we are not blinded by the light of day. In the daytime, there are many distractions, the sights and sounds of a world going round. We view it but we do not see. At night, we close our eyes to see more clearly what the mind has until then denied. Night may fall yet if we are wise, shall say hello to the darkness, our old friend*, and dream of better days. *paraphrase from the old song, The Sounds of Silence, by Simon and Garfunkel It is unusual for May to see much in the way of rain in southern California. That is why it was so refreshing to have a couple days of soft, gentle rains. It went from heat-stroke, to winter chill in a matter of hours. The skies were overcast and intermittent showers trailed through the area. It has been delightful. So I went out with Miguelito this morning a walked in the rain. Miguelito, my little chihuahua yorkie mix was home alone with me today as his companions were at the groomer having a spa day. I am sure he was worried, wondering why I took them away and didn't come home with them, but he must have thought is was even more peculiar to have me put on his harness and take him out in the rain. He cringed and wriggled, but finally realized we were really going and finally seemed t enjoy the adventure. And it took his mind off missing his friends. (He is not ready to go to the groomers. Plus he is so tiny, I can dip him and be done in a few minutes!). I think if you dress appropriatley, walking in a gentle spring rain can be one of the most soul nourishing things you can do. April showers are supposed to bring May flowers. In southern California, they seem to come, even with little or no rain. But if that is so, what do you suppose May showers are supposed to bring? While you think about that, may you take a walk in the spring rain and not hurry through it. You won't melt as my grandmother used to say. She was right. In fact, I 5/5/2013 0 Comments Five of MayFive days into May. The fifth. Maybe I should take the fifth...but I don't know where I would put it. Best left where it is, on the calendar. Of course it is the Fifth of May or, as we Americanos call it, Cinco de Mayo. The day of Mexican independence. Well, actually, I think it actually celebrates a victory over an invading army from France. The actual independence day for Mexico is I believe September 5th or 6th. But anyhoo, it is a wonderful reason to eat Mexican food and celebrate Mexican heritage, which, sadly, I did not do. I went to a truck show in Perris and had lasagna at an Italian restaurant, gringo that I am. So five days of May down. Twenty six to go. June will be busting out all over before you know it. Where is the time flying? I don't know. I really don't know. Feliz primer día del resto de tu vida. En todo. (Happy first day of the rest of your life. Entirely.) 5/4/2013 0 Comments Ode to Mayonaisse"Bring out the Hellman's bring out the best..." Ah the joys of mayonaisse! Rich and creamy, such a delightful addition to most sandwiches. Delightful with fresh tomatoes or on a ham and cheese, why just today I had one of my childhood favorites, peanut butter and mayonaisse. Yummm. Mayo for short, it makes a nice base for creamy salad dressings. My mother used to coat tomatoes and lettuce in a salad with mayo until you could see no color at all. It was quite yummy, but not quite a healthy salad I have to say. Of course you should never leave mayo out to long. On picnics, it can turn rather quick on a warm day. To eat mayonaisse can be a risk-taking endeavor if you are not careful. Put some horseradish and cream cheese and you have a fine dip for potato chips or crackers. I am not sure why this revery about the joys of mayonaisse. I have to say I derive a lot of pleasure from eating and mayonaisse is one of those things I just think is a marvelous invention and culinary delight. And, well, isn't it the little things that make life worth living? I say so. |
